The SPFL Trust inspires Canada!
The Canadians are taking to the ice – FFIT style!
In the spirit of our Football Fans in Training programme, Canada’s Western University is launching an exciting new ice hockey programme for men aged 40+. They will take part in 12 week programme delivered by professional Ice Hockey Coaches, focusing on health, wellbeing and physical activity.
The University is teaming up with two Ontario Hockey League clubs to deliver the programme that, like SPFL Football Fans in Training, will use sport as a tool to encourage men to lose weight and become ‘FFIT.’ Both programmes allow men the opportunity to take part in physical and classroom based activities under the watchful eye of hometown Coaches.
Fans will take part in the programme at the home of their local ice hockey clubs. “Where they feel comfortable is where they tend to congregate,” said Dr Petrella, noting in many Canadian centres, the local rink is the community hub. “We have an opportunity that if they identify with the club with what it represents in terms of health, fitness and everything they want to be.”
The intention is to make the programme available to a wider audience across the country following in the footsteps of the SPFL Trust who run the programme at 26 SPFL football clubs across Scotland.
Billy Singh, General Manager of the SPFL Trust says “This is a positive step in the right direction for the FFIT programme and the SPFL Trust as an organization. It is great to see that people are taking an interest in the programme’s fundamentals and it is a testament to the fact the course is beneficial for people nationwide.”
The SPFL Trust would like to wish the Hockey FFIT all the best for this exciting new project!
