And as she took up her new role with us at the SPFL Trust, Bernadette praised the remarkable impact of associated community trusts and SPFL clubs (ATCs) in tackling some of the biggest issues that Scotland faces.
A former chief executive at Perth & Kinross Council, Bernadette led a transformational strategy aimed at giving young people the best possible start in life. Her local authority was recognised nationally as leading the way in its approach.
Bernadette is also currently deputy chair of the Court at University of Dundee. She previously served as chair at Society of Local Authority Chief Executives.
Although the current pandemic has restricted face to face contact with clubs, Bernadette will make as many visits as possible when it is safe to do so.
She also took time to praise both outgoing chair, Bob Winter, as she also set out her immediate plans.
“I am absolutely delighted to have been elected to chair the SPFL Trust,” said Bernadette.
“I grew up in a Council Housing estate in Dundee. I was one of five siblings whose parents – despite their own heroic struggles – were devoted to giving their children the start in life which they never had.
“For them the key was education. I became the first member of my family to go to university and have enjoyed a happy and successful career. Along the way I have chaired multiple groups, been a member of various boards including a charity, and led on national policy initiatives.
“My parents instilled values which have guided me all of my life. Values about people – fairness, equality, compassion, rights, entitlement and social justice. It informed my choice of career, initially as a teacher, lecturer, community worker, volunteer and latterly as a local authority chief executive.
“Our charity has a proud record of working with partners to enable children, families and individuals to improve their lives, connect with their communities and, very importantly for me, give much needed help where it matters to those most disadvantaged by their socio-economic circumstances.
“I have seen first-hand how these programmes and interventions can lift people.
“I also wish to pay tribute to the excellent leadership of my predecessor Bob Winter, whose stewardship has shaped the SPFL Trust into an effective, respected and highly successful organisation.
“My immediate priority, will be working closely with the board and staff, to develop our relationships with partners, and to explore opportunities for further programmes to expand the reach and impact of our charity.”
Following the SPFL Trust’s AGM, Graham Watt has also been elected Vice Chair, whilst Charles Barnett will continue as Treasurer. Although stepping down as chair, Bob Winter will remain a trustee for the time being.
